Short & Sweet: She Follows

Nourishment for the Soul

Nourishment for the Soul

15 “And she [Naomi] said, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” 16 But Ruth said:

“Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you;
For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge;
Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God.
17  Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried.
The LORD do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me.”
Ruth 1:15-17
Ruth is a daughter-in-law of Naomi and Elimelech. During a time of famine, Naomi followed her husband from the land of Israel to the land of Moab; a very controversial move.  In Moab, Naomi’s two sons married Moabite women; another controversial move.
After the deaths of all three husbands, Naomi decides to follow the stirring of the Holy Spirit and return to Israel; a smart move. However, perhaps fearing racial tensions in Israel, Naomi tells her daughters-in-law to return to Moab. Orpah quickly turns back, but Ruth …  she follows.
She follows whom?
At first glance it appears she follows Naomi. When we follow the progression of the verses,
1. Where you go, I go,
2. Where you live, I live,
3. Your people, my people,
4. Your God, my God,
however, we learn she follows Naomi right to the heart of God.
In the eyes of the culture, Ruth has little future in Israel.
1. She’s a woman.
2. She’s a widow.
3. She’s a foreigner.
4. She’s a Moabite.
Despite the strikes against her, Ruth risks everything and she follows. The daughter-in-law of Naomi would rather live as an outcast and follow God in Israel than live in comfort in Moab. Ruth chooses her soul over her flesh.
Thankfully, even a foreign widow from a pagan land. In God’s perfect timimg, Ruth marries Boaz, the most eligible man in town and becomes part of the family line of Christ; a scandalous  move … the scandalous love of God.
Can we be like Ruth and fly in the face of public opinion and follow God?
She follows.

Action Points:

  1. What steps do you need to take today to follow God?
  2. What do you need to leave behind so you can follow Him?
  3. Are you willing to follow without the approval of others, even the approval of close friends and family members?

Life is sweet.

Short & Sweet: Crosswords by Mary Kane

Nourishment and refreshment for your soul.

Nourishment and refreshment for your soul.

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 1:18

I love words. When I was a child I would repeat multi-syllabic (now that’s a good word) rhyming words over and over; fascinated by the way they rolled off my tongue. Long words, archaic words, unusual words, foreign phrases, and word origins are very intriguing to me.  Because I love words, I also love crossword puzzles. For years, the only reason we subscribed to the Sunday edition of the newspaper was so I could get the crossword puzzle. Crosswordscross words.

Cross words.

The cross is full of words also.

love … sacrifice … joy … pain … forgiveness … hope …

restoration … redemption … blood … healing … purpose

life … grace … peace.

Cross words are powerful words; foolishness to the world, but salvation to those of us who love cross words.

Action Points:

  1. What cross word is most meaningful to you?
  2. Pray your cross word into your life today.
  3. Listen for God to speak your cross word to you through music, other people, radio messages, billboards, etc.

Life is sweet!

1 Thessalonians A Life of Faith, Part 13: Pray and Perfect

9 For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God,  10 night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect what is lacking in your faith. 1 Thessalonians 3:10

Picture perfectpractice makes perfect. These well-known idioms are part of American culture.  People long for perfection. Perfectionism is a cruel task master, especially when one is … well, …imperfect.  Despite oDOve JPEG 10 edtur flawed condition, we continue to seek perfection. We work, strive, and labor for perfect test scores, perfect teeth, perfect children, the perfect job, the perfect wedding, the perfect vacations,  the perfect house, the perfect outfit, etc.  We try everything except the one thing that will help achieve our goal–prayer. Prayer, however,  helps us not to be perfect, but to be perfected. Biblical perfection is very different from the human idea of perfection.

What does perfection have to do with a life of faith? The Bible does have a good deal to say about perfection,

“Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:48

Whew! That sounds like a perfect impossibility until we read,

“I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.” John 17:23

and,

“Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.” Colossians 1:28

God’s plan in for man to be perfected, but Biblical perfection will not be achieved apart from Christ. To learn how to be perfected, please click on the link below.

1 Thessalonians A Life of Faith, Part 1: Grace and Peace

Peace out. Peace on earth. Peace of mind.

What comes to your mind when you think of peace? According to www.globalissues.org, the world spends about $2 trillion dollars every year to keep the peace. We only have to listen to the news for a few moments to realize that our peace plan is ineffective. A life of peace cannot be bought with earthly currency; it is only purchased through faith by the blood of Christ. The world continues to rage, and we continue to face hardships and challenges. But when we live a life of faith, God gives us His grace so we can live in peace with Him.

Walk Like an Ephesian, Part 4: 1 + 1 = 1 by Mary Kane

ID-100171417Reading, writing and ‘rithmetic are very important to a well-rounded education. Ask any kindergarten student and they will tell you that 1 + 1 =2. But is that axiom always true? God’s Word states that 1 + 1 = 1. How is that possible? Only by the blood of Christ. To do part 4 of Walk Like an Ephesian, please click on the link.
